چکیده

We have used ballistic electron magnetic microscopy to image, with nanometer resolution, the magnetization behavior of Co/Cu/Co trilayer films in the presence of a magnetic field. Films prepared both by thermal evaporation and by magnetron sputtering have been studied. In each case we have observed both large, ;500 nm, domain structures, and much smaller, apparently randomly dispersed, regions of magnetic misalignment between the Co layers that persist to fields .100 Oe. We find the details of the ballistic electron transport through the films to be different on small length scales, ;50 nm, for the two types of growth methods. © 2000 American Institute of Physics. @S0021-8979~00!80508-3#

Ballistic electron magnetic microscopy: Imaging magnetic domains with nanometer resolution

A variation of ballistic electron emission microscopy has been developed to image magnetic structure in thin-film multilayers with nanometer resolution. In studies of nominally uncoupled Co/Cu/Co trilayer films, magnetic domains and domain-wall motion are readily observable with this technique. In the Co/Cu/Co trilayer system magnetic domains are found to occur on an ;500-nm-length scale and le...

Growth of Magnetic Tunnel Junctions

Three applications of ballistic electron microscopy are used to study, with nanometer-scale resolution, the magnetic and electronic properties of magnetic multilayer thin films and tunnel junctions. First, the capabilities of ballistic electron magnetic microscopy are demonstrated through an investigation of the switching behavior of continuous Ni80Fe20 /Cu/Co trilayer films in the presence of ...

Observation of magnetization reversal of thin-film permalloy nanostructures using ballistic electron magnetic microscopy

We have imaged the magnetization reversal process of thin-film permalloy (Ni80Fe20) nanostructures using ballistic electron magnetic microscopy. Their switching behavior is often influenced by the formation of end domains and the subsequent domain-wall propagation under application of a magnetic field. Occasionally, this process leads to the formation of a 360° domain wall that is stable in fie...

MFM studies of interlayer exchange coupling in Co/Ru/Co films: Effect of Ru layer thickness.

Antiferromagnetically coupled magnetic thin films are promising candidates for the design of new magnetic storage and logic devices. The ability to control the interlayer thickness, therefore the magnetic reversal response, of exchange-coupled magnetic layers is of paramount importance in nanotechnology, especially in magnetic sensing element design and applications. In this work, magnetic forc...

Spin-dependent hot electron transport in Co/Cu thin films

Hot-electron transport in Co/Cu/Co trilayer films has been studied in the energy range from 1.0 to 2.0 eV using ballistic electron magnetic microscopy. Both the spin-dependent attenuation lengths of Co and the cumulative polarizing effects of spin-dependent tunneling and transmission across a Co/Cu interface have been determined. For very thin (a few A) Co layers, the latter effects result in a...
